PROJECTIONS.

The other day, we decided to explore projecting our samples, photographs and drawings onto a white shirt to get an idea about what we are going to do for our video. It was a very productive day as we managed to get a lot of footage to play around with and practice ideas before we create the final piece. We were all very pleased with the outcome and will be using projections throughout the rest of our journey in this project. Here is some footage that I took:

First Projection Session

When finding out we had to make our final out come digital we decided to project our samples we had done so far on to a white shirt to link to looking at hidden Manchester within a shirt. The shirt was open to create this effect.  This was the first time the group was using film equipment so everyone was experimenting with different angles. We also looked at having not only a shirt but what it would look like if some one was wearing the shirt as shown in the film. These projections were really successful and a great start to what we wanted our project to look like.

Manchester from the inside.

We have decided to develop the idea of future fashion being potentially tailor made for each individual. As we seem to live in this throw away culture it has quickly become the norm to buy clothes cheaply from places such as Primark and not worry if they were to get ruined as they have no sentimental value to you. We have discussed what we would like to get from this project and we have decided we would like to propose the question of who we wear clothes for. Is it for ourselves? Is it for other people to look at and admire? Is it to show off?  We want to create ideas from the concept of the detailing on the inside of garments. Here are a few artists and modern day concepts that I think it would be worth investigating..

Suzanne Lee

I found this artist the other day from the Central Saint Martins graduate website. I thought her designs were so innovative and fashion thinking outside of the box. She makes wearable things with other concepts and messages attached.

From photos to fabric

I really enjoy machine embroidery, and in our group we discussed that machine embroidery and hand stitch are going to take center stage in our project as they are both slow processes and require love and patience. I have taken fabrics and dyed them, then taking colours from my photos and using thread and different machine feet to explore and experiment with stitch on the machine, creating different textures and feel to the fabric. I want to carry on experimenting and begin to start on a final sample, perhaps stitching into the inside of a shirt or the inside lining of a pair of trousers to create the 'hidden gems' effect.

Watercoloured bricks

This is a video of one of the samples that I had done of the red bricks. I used watercolour on fabric as it would give me that blended and mouldy effect that was on the bricks. I felt as though it had worked really well. I took photographs of the process and it looks as though the mould is growing and eventually dies out. Tell me what you think of the video, maybe i could add music?

Hussein Chalayan

Hussein Chalayan attended Central Saint Martins and graduated in 1993, with a collection titled “The Tangent Flows”, where he experiments not only with fabrics and patterns but also with the techniques he applies to the fabrics. In “The Tangent Flows” he buried all the clothes in his backyard once they were finished, and dug them up before his end-of-year show. This collection was a rebellion against the contemporary man, whom he believes to be miserable, this feeling is what makes him want to wear rubbish. I love the idea of burying fabric and leaving it and seeing what the outcome is, the earthy feel and colours remind me of the red brick of Manchester.

Dissolvable Fabric Samples..

I have been stitching into lots of dissolvable fabric, using the aerial views of manchester as inspiration. I have used threads inspired from the colouring of the brickwork we have been looking at. I also think lots of them together make lots of texture, and I tried stitching it into the inside of a shirt to get that 'hidden' element.

Projecting

As a group we wanted to experiment with projecting our photos, samples and drawing onto white sheets and garments, the idea of creating textures and images onto the clothing to get an idea about what our actual final piece is going to look like. We were all happy with the outcome and e are really keen to start videoing our work, perhaps showing our concept of 'slow is beautiful' by filming water dissolvable fabric being dissolved very slowly, or perhaps something being set on fire to reveal brick work underneath. Here are some of my images..

Group Project Images.

Today we spent a few hours as a group projecting our scanned and photographed drawings, samples and prints onto large pieces of white fabric. We also tried projecting onto the inside of some plain coloured garments.  We are really pleased with the way this has worked out and think it really portrays our concept well as we want to focus on all the detailing being on the inside of the clothing. The next step of our idea  would be to go back into some of the images in Photoshop but also to schedule another shoot soon where we could maybe project onto our projections from today to really give the layered idea we are trying to create!
