FINAL FILM TO BE SHOWN AT MOSI

We have now approached the deadline of our piece and can see what a jounrney our project and final film has been through. We had so many different ideas for our final film and have chopped and changed it countless time so that it embodies everything we wanted it too. We all finally decided on our final film thanks to the input from Alex, Kate, Julie and Mary.

Development of film sandwich section

After I went to go and test out our films at the Museum of Science and Industry. Katie and Julie had a look at the different bits of footage we had done and really like our group drawing and the footage of Vincent and Emma with our samples projected. However they said that at the moment they looked like two separate films and we need to find a way of linking them together. Trying to find the 'filling to our sandwich' so it would flow and be more successful. We realised that we had footage of our drawing projected on Vincents body and though this would be a great way of combining everything. So the film would go: Drawing- parts of drawing projected on Vincent - Vincents body with our samples projected - Vincent and Emma projection footage combined together with our samples - just Emma with our samples projected - end.  As a group we decided this footage would make the best  'filling to our sandwich'.

Final Film

We have been working really hard the last few days to edit all our film footage to a 4 minute long film. We wanted to get all the elements of our project into the film, the idea of hidden Manchester (we spent a day filming hidden areas of Manchester), the water dissolvable fabric films, the projections and our samples. We started by mixing all elements together but this came across as quite confusing and not making sense to the audience. We decided to simplify it and just have projected images onto our model flashing to the beat of our chosen tracks, this works well and looks exciting and intriguing. Another idea was to project the film onto an open shirt to show our concept of inside Manchester and hidden gems and film it then use this as the final film, we experimented with this but decided that this was not as successful or as clear as just showing the original film. Here are some images of the film being projected onto the shirt..

Josie and Emma Drawing

Josie and Emma where ill when we did our drawing and so did their own version which really complemented our drawing because it looked as though there mark making they did could be a really close up version of our Drawing. I edited it by fast forwarding it and adding a sephia tone so it links with our drawing.

Beccie Filming

Grace and I had a film session with my friend Beccie to see what it would look like projecting the films Josie, Emma, Lamia and Sophie had done in Manchester and the dissolvable films everyone had done on her moving figure and whether it would be successful or not. These our a few tester short films looking at combining footage of Manchester with the moving body.

Beccie is luckily very flexible and was able to do a back flip which looked really intriguing in fast forward. It linked really nicely to our whole theme hidden (inside the body) projecting elements on the outside.

Projecting with layers

We used previous footage from our other film days, combined film and images to project onto a female and male model. came up with some really intriguing shots which look really successful. Also projected our drawing we had done the previous day.

A lot of these images look as though we have projects parts of the inside of the body on the outside. revealing the models inner layer by projecting it on their outter. These images were very successful and will be used in our final film.

Drawing and Filming

As Emma and I missed the first group drawing day we decided to produce our own drawing, film it and fast forward it to create the feel of growth and progression. We experimented with lots of different materials making sure we took inspiration from our original work, taking elements from our samples and using mark making to portray them. The film looks great fast forwarded and we will be using it in our final film. The drawing was also very successful with a lot of texture and different marks to it, having two people draw together gives diversity to a drawing and you can play off each others strengths.

Development of film Vincent and emma

We filmed Vincent and Emma again with projects of our old and new samples on them. Then editing this to the music that we are thinking of using for our final film 'Beat For' by Jamie xx. We used the music to our advantge to emphasis certain samples of each person in the group. Also try to successful combine the footage of vincent and emma and see where it flows. Everyone is the group really liked this footage.

Drawing flat

Grace, Lamia, Sophie and I had a massive drawing day using the brick work of Manchester and our samples to work from creating different marks and an interesting colour palette and filming the whole thing. We did 3 drawing two on the wall and one flat on a table to get different perspective. This was really successful as we had our own individual style but we all seems to complement one another's work. We changed position half way through each drawing so that we could put our own marks on some one else's area.

Film Titles

For our film we needed titles at the beginning, we decided that it would work well if we machine stitched them into water dissolvable fabric and filmed them being dissolved for the title. I experimented with this in the embroidery room.

Bon Iver film.

I thought this film might be able to give us a little bit of inspiration for the coming week of filming and editing we need to do. Although it doesn't directly relate to theme I think the fluidity and simplicity is something we could really take into account once editing our film. Sometimes the simpler the film the more effective it can be. We want to try and get the ideas that we have been developing throughout the last few weeks through clearly in our film

First final film idea

This was a possible idea/test of what we we are think for our final film idea. We all felt the dissolvable pieces worked really well and having it shown in different perspective such as on a male body which photographic stills has if the sample was disintegrating this was very successful because it really resembled a heart. Then filming at a different angle with the same dissolvable piece Grace had done but in fast forward so it is more noticeable similar to decay (Sam Taylor  Wood) still life. Then this filmed bit being projected on to beccies moving figure in slow motion then try to link back to Manchester. I know it is cut sort and not a great ending but was just a tester. We all realy like the out come of this one and hope to develop it further.

Vincent Projection first time

We got Vincent in to try to project some of our samples on his body. We wanted to see what our samples would look like on a male and directly onto the skin. However due to the set up of the room and the light in the room the samples were not as bold as we would have liked. We a major set back because the orginial studio we had booked for the day had very strict health and safetly rules and would  not allow us to bring in any of the AV stores filming equipment in so with the help from the people in the Cavandish building we were able to use the film studio. However this was our first time setting up all the equipment so it took a lot longer then we expected so we had a limited time to do want we wanted with Vincent.

The footage that we felt was the most successful from this day was a short breathing piece we had done which was inspired by the Iris van Herpen film of the chest. So we did our own interpretation of the chest moving slowly up and down we though this could be a great start to our film having a body breathing and then zooming into the 'heart' of Manchester.

using different techniques, such as slow motion and fast forward.

Dissolvable Film

This is a short animation of my sample slowing being dissolved. We used a spray with warm water to dissolve the piece gradually. I think the piece relates to the research we did about Gunther von Hagens body world. I think the piece once dissolved almost looks like intestines. I love the way once zoomed in you can't really tell what it is.

Dissolving Film day

From looking at artist such as Sam Taylor wood which we all though reflect slow is beautiful, we though we should play around with dissolvable fabric as it could look similar to something slowly decaying. Everyone rented out cameras, tripods and different lighting so we could film at different angles and everyone was very much involved. Josie created some tester samples on the embroidery machine and see what they looked like when we dissolved them and how effective they were film wise. Grace created a hand embroidery piece consisting of French knot and other embroidery techniques which had similarities to what the inside of the body would look like which linked well to our main theme in our project looking at hidden elements (Manchester) inside a jacket.

We looked at dissolving things on the actual body. An example shown below of emma's arm and a dissolvable sample Josie did. As the fabric around it starts to dissolve it looks every similar to veins but on the outside of the body. Similar to Gunther Von Hagens work with veins. Looks like the veins growing/moving on the outside of the arm. Which could be linked to ageing.. slowly as you get older you veins get more extenuated.

For some reason the dissolving arm film is not come up on my youtube so here is the link above

First Projection Session

When finding out we had to make our final out come digital we decided to project our samples we had done so far on to a white shirt to link to looking at hidden Manchester within a shirt. The shirt was open to create this effect.  This was the first time the group was using film equipment so everyone was experimenting with different angles. We also looked at having not only a shirt but what it would look like if some one was wearing the shirt as shown in the film. These projections were really successful and a great start to what we wanted our project to look like.

Inspirational Film

When looking through the fashion films on showstudio.com I came across the video called 'Dynamic Blooms' by Nick Knight, the whole video is mesmerizing, the way the fabric flows and the change colours. I was thinking for our film we could put different colour filters on to change the dynamic of the film. I especially love the colour in this film, the red and pinks link to our own colour palette.

Manchester filming

While Grace and I were experimenting with combing plaster and clothing like the artist Aurore Thibout. Sophie, Josie, Lamia and Emma went out into Manchester to film different areas that we have been looking at such as the purple/red brick of Manchester one of its signature stamps. Mayfield station (hidden Gem). It also features Hotspur were we have been positioned in unit x. I edited the different films using different feature such as slow motion, fast forward and rewind and also adding music to give it a better atmosphere.
