Hand Stitch Sampling...

Having a long train journey home and not having my  sewing machine, I decided (still using dissolvable fabric) to do some hand stitch. My colour palette was from my photos of bricks and I wanted to concentrate on texture.

Progression of Shirt...

After adding my 'dissolvable fabric maps' to a white shirt, I decided to dye the shirt a terracotta colour to represent some of the colours from brickwork. The colour didnt quite work out how I imagined but I took these photos which I think represent our 'hidden' element well.

Hiding Layers

Yesterday I did a mini shoot with a few of my samples to see what they looked like up against a brick wall. I thought it would be an interesting place to revisit where we got our original inspiration for the project. I have tried to layer the samples over one another so as to almost hide the layer underneath as you add more. I wanted to try and experiment with our concept of the hidden inner beauty of things and I think these could relate to our project quite nicely. 

 I think it's quite interesting to see the patterns you get coming through once you layer the pieces on top of one another and it's that part that I think captures our concept. If this was then translated into something wearable we would make something that had lots of layers to it and as the layers continued they got less and less detailed, leaving the heavily detailed pieces near the bottom.

I thought I would post a few of my own drawings from the brick work we have been looking at and I thought these could lead on nicely to what we have discussed about doing some group drawing sessions..

Update on French Knotted Piece.

I have continued to work on this piece in my own time and it has started to grow progressively quicker. I have started to mix in some dyed orangey threads to emphasise the terracotta colours you see in brickwork so much. I thought i'd post this on the group blog as it could be something we decided to put into our final film as a projection or maybe with someone wearing it! I also thought that it captures our idea of hidden Manchester quite well and the brickwork aspect. It could be something to develop as a group and add layers over the top?

 These knots have taken such a long time to do, as I have to connect each knot into the next so that they attach without having to use any dissovable fabric. I realise it won't be possible to finish this piece before the end of the project but I think this really does portray our starting idea of the slow is beautiful. Mainly because of its time consuming properties. Also I think there is enough of the piece to get across my concept.

  I am really happy with the way this sample has developed and it may even be something I continue to develop throughout the next few months and watch its growth. It also holds a lot of our hidden concept as I add more and more knots other colours and stitches get swallowed up by the next.

Dissolvable Fabric Samples..

I have been stitching into lots of dissolvable fabric, using the aerial views of manchester as inspiration. I have used threads inspired from the colouring of the brickwork we have been looking at. I also think lots of them together make lots of texture, and I tried stitching it into the inside of a shirt to get that 'hidden' element.

Brickwork Sample

This is one of my initial samples after deciding on the theme of brickwork for our project. I thought i'd post these images as a possible idea of how we could display some of our samples. It really helped me to think about the way we might want the samples to look and the shape and form we may want them to take. Also the small section of embroidery in some of the images has been hidden as the wind blew the sample. I think this looks really effective and captures the essence of our hidden element.

This is a piece I have been working on through the Easter break. I started thinking about some of the place we visited around Manchester and the idea of maps that had been developing over the last few group meetings since the start of the project. I thought I would start off by looking at maps of Manchester quite literally and tracing the outline of the city and some of the main roads running through...

MOSI COLLECTIONS VISIT.

Yesterday, the whole of wearing it  took a trip a to MOSI to venture round and get inspired by what our exhibition surrounding are going to be. It was very exciting to see the screens that our work will be shown on in just 9 weeks!! I am so excited to start and get fully stuck in!
